Our History
Summer
Dreams began with a group of camping alumni who shared a belief
in the value of organized camping. The catalyst for the foundation
was the celebration of Camp Robin Hood's fiftieth season in
1995. The group, having been actively involved in camping
as both campers and staff, recognized how important the camping
experience was in a child's life. They also recognized how
many children in Ontario were unable to attend camp because
of a lack of financial means. These alumni wanted to give
children the opportunity to experience the memories, thrills,
enthusiasm and learning that summer camp provides. And thus
Summer Dreams was born.
Our Structure
Summer
Dreams is a registered charitable foundation. Structurally,
Summer Dreams is set up as a corporation. The Charity is actively
managed by a board of directors, with each director elected
for a one year term at an annual general meeting. The directors
include a President (who also acts as the Chairman of the
Board), a Vice-President, a Secretary and a Treasurer. While
only two directors are needed for a meeting of the board of
directors, a majority of the directors form a quorum for the
transaction of business. Any question is decided by a majority
of votes. If there is a tie, the President can have a second
or casting vote. The Vice-President serves the role of President
in the President's absence.
The
directors administer the affairs of the corporation with the
assistance of officers. The officersneed not be members of
the board of directors, but like the directors, must be a
member of the charity. Neither officers nor directors receive
renumeration.
Our Membership
Membership of Summer Dreams includes all individuals, corporations,
partnerships and other legal entities that make a donation
of at least ten dollars per year. Each member is entitled
to one vote on each question arising at any special, general
or annual meeting of the members. Every question at the meeting
is decided by a majority of the votes.
